Challenge

ChocolateBox Café co-owner Zareh Baghdasarian began his love affair with chocolate from a purely rational standpoint. For the successful venture investor and accomplished telecommunications engineer, ChocolateBox Café started out as an investment idea. Baghdasarian was interested in the rise of café culture in the United States, but not impressed with the high-calorie, low-nutrition pastries and cakes that were being sold at the mass-market coffee shops. His vision of a European style dessert café was to take three of the world’s greatest pleasures – fine coffee, world-class, handmade chocolates and Italian gelato – and place them under one roof.

Campaign

He spent two years traveling through Belgium, seeking out the finest purveyors of the high quality chocolate that makes that country legendary. While in Verona, Italy, he discovered a small gelato maker who uses only 100% organic ingredients, and was willing to ship gelato on ice to the US regularly. The same attention to detail and thirst for the exquisite led Zareh to develop a relationship with the designer of Bulgari’s jewelry boxes, to design some of the packaging for ChocolateBox Café.

Zareh brought on The Busby Group to drive traffic to his elegant La Canada cafe and boost holiday sales of his luxury dessert products. He also asked us to help him connect with potential strategic partners, especially in the entertainment industry.

Results

We delivered on all fronts, earning “Best of LA” honors for ChocolateBox Cafe in LA Weekly and LA Confidential, and garnering extensive media coverage in Sunset Magazine, Robb Report, Luxury Las Vegas, Boulevard, Pasadena Magazine, LA Brides and numerous holiday gift guides. We also introduced Zareh to officials at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. After sampling his sweets, they asked him to create special gift boxes of Oscar-branded chocolates that were given to everyone who attended the Oscars Awards Dinner that year.
